DL155 - Certificate Creative Pathways for All – Learning to Learn

IADT is launching a new Level 6 course exclusively for mature students with intellectual disabilities with an interest in film, animation, photography and design.

Young people with intellectual disabilities is a group of learners who to date have not had many college course options available to them.

The Creative Pathways for All – Learning to Learn is an exciting 18-month college course that will run over two days per week from 10am-2pm. The course will follow the college timetable of classes from January to April and September to December. There are 10 places available on this course and there are no fees.

Course overview

The first module called learning to learn will support each student to transition to college life, the independence that it will offer and new ways of learning. Other year one modules that students will learn include animation, photography, design and art in practical workshop classes.

Year two of the course will focus on work taster or work placement learning. Students will learn about work skills, how to create a curriculum vitae and how to use LinkedIn. A work placement or work placement taster option will complete the learning in year 2 of the course.

What will I study

Creative Pathways students will have access to a range of modules including:

Learning to Learn

This module will support students to develop their knowledge and become independent learners. This module will include:

Using the Library and Information skills to support student learning
Academic Writing Skills
Study and Learning Skills
Presentation Skills
Introduction to Research and Referencing Skills

Creative Workshop

This module’s objective is to allow learners to explore a range of creative disciplines (film, art, design and photography) and to work with students and staff across IADT on creative projects.

Work Readiness Programme

This module will focus on developing the student’s workplace skills. Students will be supported to Develop a CV and LinkedIn profile, and secure a work placement or work taster opportunity.

Work Placement

Students will complete a short work placement with support from IADT.

What are the criteria to be accepted into the course?

The eligibility for the course is as follows:

You must be over 18
You must have evidence of intellectual disability
You must be able to travel independently
You must have attended Level 3 qualification or equivalent. Recognition of prior learning will be awarded on a case by case basis.

What is the Application process?

How long will the course run for?

The course will run for 18 months from January 2025 until May 2026. Classes will be on campus for 2 days per week, from 10am- 2pm.

How will students learning be assessed?

This course will not have exams. Students will instead show their learning in a variety of ways, including reflective journals, class participation, podcasts, video clips, storytelling, models, photographic displays and/or short quizzes.

Students will have the option of completing the module for learning credit up to 10 learning credits, or as an audit module (meaning they attend lectures, but do not complete the course assessments).

What learning support will be available to students in IADT?

A range of supports will be available to support students, Peer Mentoring/ Buddy System, specialist Educational Assistive Technology staff, Occupational Therapists and Learning support assistants.

Will I be a registered IADT student?

Yes, on registration students will receive an IADT student card. This will allow you to have discounts at the cinema, haircuts, clothing etc. Your class will also elect a class representative who will attend student union meetings so that you are all kept up to date on college events and information.

Furthermore, you can join the many IADT student societies such as Film Society, Horror Society, Gaming Society, Soccer Society, Car Society etc. Finally, you will enjoy a college graduation day with family and friends to celebrate your learning in IADT college.
